Chapter 9

Nothing Stays the Same

Robert

My greatest wish was that we could just be insulated in this house and this time. The concerns of the world couldn’t cross the threshold and then we would truly be happy. Rupe and I understood that Sunny would have second thoughts and want to leave the second reality intruded. I’m not saying it was her nature to run, from what I understood she had been convinced it was the only way to handle the situation and who knows, it might have been at the time. Our council certainly was no help and the new information we’d received had not convinced me that they ever would be.

Maybe we alphas were to blame. I don’t mean just the ones here, I mean those across the continent that had been content to allow the council to rule and do pretty much as they wanted. We should have made them accountable, and it wasn’t too late to begin to do so. They were wolves, just like us and they could be removed from their position in several ways if they refused to do what was right for our people. There was a war brewing and now that my eyes had been opened, I could feel it in the air and see it in my mind.

It had always been our dream to rule our pack together, but maybe one of us needed to be on the council where we would see to all the people of our kind. Sunny’s arrival and subsequent troubles had brought a hard shot of reality with it. Forced mating had been against wolf law for a century and yet it was being pursued and an appeal to the council had brought no response? That more than anything had shown me it was time for change. There was no way to be sure I could even manage it, I wasn’t a political wolf like many of the members were. My reasoning was if a member were shown to be corrupt, vacancies would follow and someone who cared about our people was needed. At some point, Damon would put out the call for alphas to fill the position. That was a call I would answer once I discussed it with my family and my mate.

I felt her move against me. Sunny had had no trouble satisfying both of us once she had let loose of her ill opinions of us. The way things were when we were together was incredible. My phone vibrated in my pocket. This was no surprise because after three days of no word from Blue, it was past time to hear from him.

“Hello,” I said.

“I guess you’ve wondered what was going on.” Blue asked.

“Of course,” I returned.

“The first two days, they must have been regrouping and plotting. We saw no activity beyond some movement around the old witch’s house. Yesterday, or I suppose more last night, they sent half a dozen crazy ass blood wolves so bad off, one dropped dead before he could inflict much damage.
